The Law of Relativity

This sacred space is a microcosm of the rest of the world. And while I learn so much in this space there are other times...

There are times when I feel absolutely lost, and while this might be easier to navigate alone, I'm never alone when this happens. I'm the opposite of alone and I'm actually in place power, and that makes it all the more frustrating. Adjudication and other forms of assessment are part of my career but I am not very fond of it. In this sacred space, they expose a piece of their soul, who am I judge if your soul is good or bad. And on the other side who can accurately judge me? While my life includes many years of experience in the world of dance, I still do not feel that I am equipped to judge what is good or bad.

Good and Bad are relative, and the more I live life the clearer this is to me. As I sit on the other side of the performance, I realize I'm judging this person's ability to meet expectations. At any given moment those expectations could belong to me or the institution I work for, and only tell me if this person is a good fit. These expectations do not tell me if this person is a good dancer nor do they tell me if they are a good person. Good and Bad are relative. I can support them as they build clarity, but only they know the kind of art their soul wants to create. Only they know what is truly good for them. I've begun to ask my students to identify their intention and their personal definition of success. Armed with their information, I objectively document their experience based on their ideals.

Be it a party, a club, or the performance stage, the dance floor is a sacred space where people offer a portion of the soul. I can not judge your soul, because your soul is your truth. Only you know your truth and what is good for you. Good and Bad are relative. Relative you own personal desired outcome. It’s easy to get caught up in other people’s ideas of what is good/ bad, right/wrong. With all that calamity it is easy to lose sight of the wisest of them all.

Inside of you lives a very wise being. It knows you deeper than anyone because this being is You. Take some time to sit in silence and listen to what your soul has to say. It will never steer you wrong because it has your best interest at heart. In the words of the wonderful Mama Maria Broom:
