The award is $15,000, and the application is simple, just tell us what you care about, and what are your interests?
She made it sound so simple but I was stuck. My mind filled with thousands of words, but I couldn't make a cohesive sentence.
What was I interested in?
What was the purpose of my work?
And the most pressing of them all: Why couldn't I answer this question.
I know why...because like so many others, I'd lost sight of my dream, my mission, my purpose. I think it fell out of my pocket somewhere back there when I was trying to figure out how to pay the mortgage, or maybe I used it to wipe one of the children's snotty noses. I couldn't remember where I lost sight of how I wanted to live my life but needed to find it very quickly because there was money on the line, and as Kezia Williams would say " We don't leave the money on the table". Trying to search my brain proved pointless, so I retreated to my journals. For certain my journal held the words of the true me and I was right! Buried in the pages of my journals was me... dreams of the life I wanted to live and the person that I wanted to be. I'm so happy my mother made me write because in this moment this writing was the record of how I wanted to define myself, and what I wanted to create for myself. Those journals held the guidance I needed to get back on track and finish this marathon.
This year ended and began with Kwanza, so I’ll take this time to remind of kujichagulia(self-determination) Kujichagulia i is knowing yourself, creating for yourself, and speaking for yourself. You must keep SELF at the center of the daily practice of living your life.
When we let go of our own power by partaking in self-sacrificing behaviors we lose!
We lose the energy, power, and the ability to protect the very things that we hold so dear to our hearts.
We lose the ability to gain the things that we want. In the wonderful wise words of Sheila C. Johnson:
“Don't ever lose sight of who you are and you're own power”
If you want a better life for yourself and those under your charge, you must be determined to take of yourself. Because without you they(we) all lose.
🔅Keep your eyes on the prize.
🔅This is a marathon, not a sprint.
🔅Don’t give the keys to your kingdom to someone else.
🔅Self-care is wealth & health care.
