Pregnancy, a blessing not an illness

Updated: Jul 3, 2021

Yup, that's me teaching a dance class well into my third trimester of pregnancy!

I completely understand that each pregnancy is different so I offer some of my experiences to broaden your spectrum of what it could be.

Pregnancy comes with an array of physical and emotional pressure, but there can also be beauty and creative freedom.  During my pregnancies, my pirouettes were amazing,  it was easier to maintain a grounded stance when performing non-western concert dance forms, and I choreographed sooo many pieces.  But, there were also times when I was put on a two- week of bed rest and had to change my diet to avoid gestational diabetes.  So offer this:  Listen To Your Body...

If you listen well enough it will tell you when to slow down and when to pick things back up.  Those of us outside of your body can only share our experiences, you have to live your own pregnancy. While in good health, my pregnancies only required accommodations and I was still able to live a fulfilling life.

I realize that some women have never heard stories of smooth pregnancies and deliveries, and that saddens me because hearing positive stories is what helped relieve my moments of anxiety. My first birth was about 10 hours of hard labor, I opted for an epidural in that hospital birth.  My second birth was 7 hours of hard natural labor in the Birthing Center.  My third birth was 2 hours of hard labor, this home delivery included me wearing headphones as I danced around the house listening to Baltimore Club.  It takes a strong person to be vulnerable and this experience definitely put your strength to the test.  I am thankful for my support systems that included my children's father and my sisters by my side during delivery.  Because of my support system, I knew my body was safe, and I could safely go into myself to find the strength needed for labor and delivery.

The most important advice I can give you:

Every pregnancy is different.

Listen to your body.

You have to live your own pregnancy.

Support systems make a difference.

What's your story?

What is a challenge you faced during pregnancy or labor?

What are two wonderful things you experience during pregnancy or labor?

Looking for dance classes? I'd be more than happy to instruct you or for you
